A Peacemaker of Compassion is someone who consistently shows kindness, empathy, and care for others. They help create a welcoming environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued - especially those who may feel left out or alone.

Lauren H. - Grade 7

Lauren was nominated by Ms. Assenza, Principal at St. John Bosco Catholic School. Ms. Assenza said: "auren is a bright, kind, and gentle presence in our school community. This year, Lauren has shown exceptional compassion toward a student who is new to Bosco. Lauren makes it her mission to ensure the new student feels welcomed and included. She takes the time to get to know them, introduces them to friends, and helps them feel at home. Her kindness is not performative; it’s deeply rooted in who she is. She embodies the spirit of a true peacemaker, and her quiet leadership makes Bosco a more compassionate and connected place."

Ms. Khatib - Educator

Ms. Khatib was nominated by her colleague, Ms. Divinec, who said: “From the moment new students and staff enter the school community, Ms. Khatib ensures they feel heard, seen, and valued. Her classroom is a sanctuary of respect and understanding, where students are encouraged to express themselves freely and are met with genuine care. Likewise, her support for fellow staff members is both intentional and impactful. She goes out of her way to check in, offer guidance, and create a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the classroom walls. Ms. Khatib embodies the spirit of compassion and peace building in everything she does. Her presence uplifts those around her, and her actions continually reinforce the values of respect, empathy, and community."

A Peacemaker of Justice is someone who speaks up for fairness and equity. Whether addressing bullying, advocating for inclusion, or standing up for what’s right, they reflect Christ’s call to justice and dignity for all.

Lennon R. - Grade 5

Lennon was nominated by an educator at her school, Ms. McDonough McLennan, who said: “Lennon is a Peacemaker who speaks up for fairness and equity. She follows classroom expectations and understands the importance of taking responsibility for her actions. She is an advocate for inclusion, always welcoming new group members so that they don’t feel left out. As a part of our Health unit, she thoughtfully created a poster about bullying prevention and actively participated in our class presentation about cyber bullying at our Spirit school assembly. She treats her peers and teachers with respect, reflecting on Christ’s call to dignity for all.” 

Sibesthan Bonesteel - Educator

Mr. Bonesteel was nominated by his Principal, Mr. O’Connor and Student Trustee, Ololade Aje, who said: “Mr. Bonesteel works tirelessly to support students and inspires them to pursue social justice causes. His commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and compassionate learning environment is evident in everything he does. He consistently encourages students to engage deeply with issues of equity and justice and empowers them to use their voices to make a difference. Mr. Bonesteel creates a classroom environment where every student feels safe, respected, and encouraged to use their voice. He is the kind of teacher who reminds us that school isn’t only about academics - it’s about becoming better, more empathetic people.”

A Peacemaker of Reconciliation is someone who brings people together through forgiveness, understanding, and healing. They resolve conflicts peacefully and model the grace of reconciliation in their relationships.

Yssabella V. – Grade 8

Yssabella was nominated by the Principal and Vice-Principal at her school, Mr. Boland and Mr. MacKinnon. They said: “Yssabella is a caring and empathetic student who consistently demonstrates selflessness and kindness. She treasures her friendships and goes out of her way to make everyone feel included and valued. In moments of disagreement, Yssabella responds with patience and respect, guiding her peers toward understanding and harmony. Her actions speak of forgiveness, compassion, and a genuine desire to nurture positive relationships within our school community.” 

Jenna Canning - Child and Youth Counsellor

Ms. Canning was nominated by St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Principal, Mr. Di Vizio, who said: “Jenna exemplifies the spirit of reconciliation by creating a safe and supportive environment for students facing life’s most difficult challenges. Through her compassion and understanding, she brings students together, fostering forgiveness and healing in moments of conflict. Jenna consistently models grace and empathy, helping students feel valued and connected within our school community. Beyond her daily work, she leads our Christmas outreach program, providing financial support to families in need— an act that reflects her dedication to unity and care. Her ability to resolve tensions and issues peacefully and nurture relationships makes her a true peacemaker who inspires others to embrace harmony and hope.” 

A Peacemaker of Creation is someone who actively cares for God’s creation. This could be through environmental initiatives, stewardship projects, or living out a deep respect for the Earth and all living things.

Christian R. - Grade 11

Christian was nominated by his Vice-Principal, Mr. Travis. He said: “Christian regularly volunteers for clean-ups around the school, assists where needed without hesitation, and extends his efforts into the community. Through his own initiative, Christian has built connections to recycle and repurpose items, ensuring nothing goes to waste. He also reports environmental concerns to local levels of government so they can be addressed properly. His selfless commitment, never seeking recognition, reflects a genuine desire to make our surroundings better and promote harmony with creation.” 

Ms. Holmes - Educator

Ms. Holmes was nominated by her Principal, Mr. Tremblay, who said: “Laura brings her enthusiasm and expertise in outdoor education every day. Laura volunteers her spare time at school leading the Earth Club, where she has brought together students, parents and staff to contribute to the greening of St. Bernard’s schoolyard. Laura’s work with St. Bernard’s Earth Club earned her and the school recognition from the Region of Durham this past November when she was presented with the 2025 John G. Goodwin Sustainable Group Award for going above and beyond to make a positive impact on the environment through education and/or stewardship.” 

A Peacemaker of Hope is someone who lifts others up with encouragement, joy, and optimism. They bring light into difficult situations and remind others of God’s presence and promise, even in challenging times.

Emma C. - Grade 8

Emma was nominated by her Vice-Principal, Ms. Glover. She said: “Emma’s contributions to St. James are both meaningful and uplifting. She treats every individual with respect, empathy, and genuine care. A powerful example of Emma’s hopeful spirit was demonstrated when she handcrafted crocheted poppies for Remembrance Day. Despite her busy schedule, Emma dedicated her time and energy to creating these meaningful symbols of remembrance. Emma further embodied the spirit of hope and service by donating all proceeds from the poppy sales to the veterans at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 322. Emma leads by example, reminding us that hope is built through kindness, generosity, and compassion.” 

Jo-Ann Fernandez -  Finance Administrative Assistant at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School

Jo-Ann was nominated by school Principal, Mr. O'Connor, and colleague, Ms. Sergant. They said: "In this day and age, often times seem tougher than they are. Jo-Ann has the ability to remind us that even though times seem tough, we are tougher as a community and as children of God. Her ability to lift peoples spirits comes naturally from her strong sense of faith, her internal light and her willingness to reconcile challenges with love and optimism. Often Jo-Ann reminds us to trust our own faith and encourages us to seek resolution through prayer because as she often says: Prayers can move mountains." 

A Peacemaker of Belonging is someone who creates inclusive spaces where everyone feels they belong. They go out of their way to welcome others, celebrate diversity, and build community rooted in love and respect.

Tunmise T. - Grade 8

Tunmise was nominated by his Principal, Ms. Accardi. She said: “Ti-mu-shay consistently demonstrates kindness, respect, and genuine care for others. He is always polite, greets everyone warmly, and offers help without being asked. He includes all of his peers in activities and shows natural leadership, especially on the bus, where he acts as a positive role model, supports younger students, and helps maintain a positive environment. With his conscientious work habits, consistently kind demeanour, and inclusive mindset, Ti-mu-shay truly embodies what it means to be a Peacemaker of Belonging, creating spaces where everyone feels they truly belong.” 

Justin Pugelj - Educator

Mr. Pugelj was nominated by a parent at his school, who said: “Mr. Pugelj has created an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, particularly through the annual St. Bridget play. For as long as I’ve been a parent, the play has been one of the most anticipated events of the year, bringing everyone together in a shared celebration of creativity and teamwork. What is truly remarkable is the way he ensures that every student, no matter their background or past experiences, is welcomed with open arms. Mr. Pugelj has created a space where every child feels seen and appreciated, and through his guidance, countless students have been able to grow in confidence, work toward personal development, and showcase their talents. His commitment to fostering belonging is a gift to each student and to the entire St. Bridget community.” 

A Discerning Believer is an individual formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.

• Shanaya S. - Grade 4: Shanaya was nominated by Ms. Neubauer, Vice-Principal at St. Anne Catholic School. Ms. Neubauer said: “Shanaya is kind and quick to show love to others. She is always willing to help someone in need, and often volunteers to lead the class in our prayers. Shanaya shows leadership in the classroom when it comes to various activities and leads with a positive attitude, always encouraging others. In addition, she always advocates for the justice of all in the room. Shanaya is an active member of her parish and volunteers her time as an Altar Server.”
• Jade Q. - Grade 8: Jade was nominated by Ms. Spitale, a teacher at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. Ms. Spitale said: “Jade exemplifies a true celebration of God's presence in our daily lives. With a heart full of faith and joy, she radiates the sacred mystery and love of God to everyone around her. Her warmth and kindness extend beyond words, as her smile has the power to light up not only a room, but the entire school. Her genuine love for her faith and her embodiment of God's light makes Jade a shining example for her peers and the whole community. Jade truly touches and transforms the lives of those around her every single day.”
• Timothy R. - Grade 11: Timothy was nominated by several of his educators, including Ms. Najera, Ms. Bruno, and Mr. Catangui. They said: “Timothy is a kind-hearted and thoughtful student who embraces new experiences with an open mind. Timothy always remains positive and faces everyday with perseverance, gratitude, humility, and a strong willingness to learn and grow. He always enters the classroom by greeting everyone with a smile and he never leaves without saying thank you and goodbye. Always considerate of others, Timothy will often be seen offering a helping hand whether it is time to clean up after a science lab or collaborating with a partner. He lives life being present in the moment and teaches us what it truly means to be courageous, selfless, and compassionate while demonstrating a love for others and life.”
• Adrianna F.B. - Grade 12: Adrianna was nominated by Ms. Polidano and Ms. Amaratunge from All Saints Catholic Secondary School. They said: “Adrianna is a discerning believer, actively participating in morning prayers, and serving as a model of respect during prayers related to the subject topic in discussion. She is open and honest in class discussions with her peers, and regularly attends to her faith.”
• Courtney Breedon - Educational Assistant: Courtney was nominated by St. Joseph Catholic School (Oshawa) Principal, Ms. Principe. Ms. Principe said: “Courtney models what it means to live as a follower of God. She is dedicated to our most vulnerable students in her care and treats her colleagues, students, and parents with the utmost respect and dignity. She encourages and nurtures students daily. Courtney is an active member of her church and devotes her free time to giving back to others who are less fortunate. Courtney plays a pivotal role within our school community through her actions to encourage students to become who they are meant to be. She strives to help students to be seen as created in the image and likeness of God as modelled in Jesus Christ."
• Manfred von Vulte - Grade 6 Teacher: Manfred was nominated by Ms. Remiz, the Principal at St. John XXIII Catholic School, and Mr. O’Neill, a secondary teacher at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School. They said: “Mr. von Vulte actively engages with scripture, church teachings, and the sacraments to strengthen his faith. He is very involved in his Catholic church community and is the Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Newcastle. Mr. von Vulte is committed to supporting the faith journeys of his students where classroom discussions and shared experiences enrich his students' spiritual growth and often focus on social justice and the dignity of the human person. Mr. von Vulte strives to align his life - both personally and professionally - with God’s will, fostering both personal and communal faith.”

An Effective Communicator is an individual who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values.

• Terrique R.H. - Grade 3: Terrique was nominated by school administrators who said: “Terrique has an exceptional ability to express himself with clarity, honesty, and empathy. Whether speaking with friends, family, or teachers, Terrique consistently reflects gospel values by promoting understanding and harmony in all interactions. His strong communication skills make him a positive influence in his community, showing that age is no barrier to being a profound communicator.”
• Jonathan B.C. - Grade 6: Jonathan was nominated by Ms. Paul, Principal of St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School. Ms. Paul said: “Jonathan is an Effective Communicator as he is open to diversity and respects everyone through words and actions. Jonathan makes Jesus’ story his own and integrates it into his communications with others. He is a kind and caring person who always looks for opportunities to serve others.”
• Jennavie L. - Grade 11: Jennavie was nominated by a St. Mary Catholic Secondary School community member and school educators. They said: “Jennavie is a kind individual, who often enters class with a smile on her face. She always helps others where she can and speaks with a positive mindset and heart. Jennavie always senses when it is best to listen to others and through this, she communicates effectively in light of gospel values.”
• Jaydon S. - Grade 12: Jaydon was nominated by his teacher, Mr. Drake, who said: “Jaydon is thoughtful before he speaks to others, listens empathetically and curiously, and is always measured in his responses. I sincerely enjoy talking to Jaydon throughout the day; we readily make new connections and explore ideas and concepts that adults confront as they take on the world.”
• Sandy Palumbo - Program Support Teacher: Sandy was nominated by a parent from St. Anne Catholic School, who said: “Sandy has an unwavering dedication to amplifying the voices of all students. Sandy is compassionate and she listens, understands, and acts with love and empathy. Whether she's guiding parents through unfamiliar situations, speaking up for students who need support, or ensuring that both the school and the broader community remain aware of student needs, Sandy’s communication is always thoughtful and inclusive.”
• Christine Pineau - Administrative Assistant: Christine was nominated by Mr. O’Hare, Principal at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School. He said: “Christine is someone who takes extra time on behalf of the whole community to keep us organized and informed, always listening to staff and students with compassion and sensitivity! Her thoughtful responses are well articulated and reflect the sincerity and critical awareness of Christ and the gospel values we so dearly embrace at our school and throughout the DCDSB.”

The liturgical season of Advent is a time of waiting in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord. In light of this season, we recognize individuals who are Patient in their ability to wait and persevere, even when things are difficult, by trusting in the promises of Christ.

• Ainsley W. - Grade 6: Ainsley was nominated by a staff member at her school, who said: “Ainsley exemplifies the virtue of patience through her consistent efforts to support and include students with special needs in her school community. She demonstrates exceptional understanding and compassion, taking the time to assist her peers with academic tasks and ensuring they feel valued and included. She is a role model of patience and kindness, creating a positive impact on her classmates and the broader school community.”
• Schimry R. - Grade 7: Schimry was nominated by his Vice-Principal, Ms. Liuzzi. She said: “Schimry is a newcomer to Canada and has just arrived at St. Isaac Jogues this month. He comes to school smiling, eager to learn and interact with his peers. Although Schimry's only language is French, he has found ways to build relationships with staff and students. Schimry displays patience as he learns to navigate life in a new country and new school. Schimry shows a willingness to learn and his spirit shines bright as a child of God.” 
• Bejan H. - Grade 11: Bejan was nominated by his school Principal, Mr. MacNeil, who said: “Bejan is seen as a student with quiet strength—an ability to wait calmly, to endure setbacks, and to approach challenges with a positive and steady outlook. Among his peers, this quality stands out as a key to success in both academics and personal growth. He exhibits good patience as someone who understands that achievement is not always immediate, and that real progress often requires time, effort, and persistence.”
• Clara H. - Grade 12: Clara was nominated by her school Principal, Ms. Plouffe. She said: “Clara exemplifies patience. Clara has a spare period every day, and she chooses to give herself to our students with special needs. She will go with our high needs students into Drama class and sit with them, making them feel seen. Clara’s presence is often requested from these students. Clara also loves math. She will use her time during third period to help students in our resource room with any math questions they may have. Clara has become an integral part of the Program Support department, and we are truly blessed to have her.” 
• Eugenia Jabal - Kindergarten Teacher: Eugenia was nominated by a parent from the Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School community, who said: “Ms. Jabal is the pure definition of a gentle soul. She is so kind and patient with her students. She really makes other students feel safe, heard and respected as little individuals trying to find their way in this world. Her continued patience for her students and willingness to teach them based on specific needs is truly inspiring. She has built on their strengths and encouraged their confidence as individuals." 
• Heather DeGeer - Adult and Continuing Education Teacher: Heather was nominated by her colleague, Kimberly D’Cuhna. Kimberly said: “Heather has been an English teacher at Con-Ed for numerous years and has always demonstrated patience and compassion with our adult learners. She works with many students who have low computer literacy, have language barriers and/or learning disabilities. She always treats each student with individualized attention and care. She exudes patience when assisting students with technology issues, discussing life challenges and/or working through various English assignments. Her students adore her and keep in touch with her long after they finish her class because of her vested interest in their lives and her contribution to their academic journey."

A Reflective, Creative and Holistic Thinker is an individual who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good. 

• Aela F. - Grade 4: Aela was nominated by school staff and school Principal, Ms. Faria. She said: "Aela solves her own problems but will get help when it's the right thing to do. She independently does things that benefit everyone, such as cleaning up more than her share. She is kind and tolerant of students with differences and demonstrates that she understands that we are all equal and special. She shares her ideas in class and in her groups and listens to the opinions and ideas of others respectfully even when she disagrees. Aela volunteers as a kindergarten monitor and participated in the cross country and volleyball team. She is an active member of the St. John Paul II community who has a voice that is used to live the word of God." 
• Summer L. - Grade 8: Summer was nominated by school staff and Principal, Ms. Alexander. She said: "Summer's unwavering mindset to ensure everyone feels included and supported in our school community is contagious. Summer is a reflective and creative thinker who always has a smile on her face and approaches all situations with a positive outlook. We are all thankful to have a young leader who sees the value in ensuring a just and compassionate society for the future."
• Mila C. - Grade 10: Mila was nominated by school staff and administration. Principal, Mr. O'Hare, said: "Mila has embedded herself into the fabric of the school community. Mila is a member of the student council where she acts as Minister of Communications. In this role, Mila is responsible for organizing and making the daily announcements at the beginning of each day. Mila often must make on the spot decisions involving the announcements and navigates these with grace and a calmness that belies her age as a Grade 10 student. She is always available when tasked to do student council activities and does so with a smile and a positive attitude. Mila strives to do the right thing for all in the Monsignor Paul Dwyer community and represents her peers with grace and a genuine enthusiasm befitting a student leader."
• Oreofeoluwa Lois A. - Grade 11: Lois was nominated by educator, Ms. Tone. She said: "Lois consistently goes above and beyond in all that she does. She approaches every assignment with one hundred percent effort and takes immense pride in her work, demonstrating a reflective mindset that ensures she learns and grows with each task. Her ability to think creatively is evident in her leadership roles and her active engagement in finding solutions and inspiring others to achieve their best. As a member of our school community, Lois’s contributions are unparalleled. She is on the executive for the Black Student Association, where she helps advocate for equity and inclusivity. She also serves as a leader on the School Leadership Council, guiding peers with a thoughtful and compassionate approach. Additionally, Lois is a dedicated tutor, supporting her peers academically, and her commitment to her church and extensive community outreach showcases her holistic perspective on the importance of serving others. Lois’s care for others is truly inspiring. She believes in the potential of everyone she encounters, encouraging them to strive for their best. Her ability to balance academic excellence, leadership roles, and community service speaks to her holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of life’s dimensions. Lois is a shining example of what it means to be a reflective, creative, and holistic thinker, and her positive impact on those around her makes her an exceptional candidate for this award."
• Denton Morgan - Custodian: Denton was nominated by his colleagues and school administrators. They said: "Denton Morgan is a Beacon of Hope for St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic School, as well as for the greater Durham Catholic District School Board community. His hard work and commitment to keeping schools both safe and clean is a shining example of the many reasons he has been nominated as a Beacon of Hope. There is never a time that Denton is not willing to offer a helping hand or assist those in need. His actions have a positive effect on all the staff and students he works with, inspiring all to continue to make St. Luke the Evangelist the best it can be!"
• Lara Awoleye - Social Worker/Attendance Counsellor: Lara was nominated by colleague, Shelley Phoenix. She said: "Those who have the pleasure of working with Lara know her to be a Social Worker who is constantly reflecting on her practice to ensure that she is providing the most effective service to other students and school communities. Lara incorporates trauma informed practices in every aspect of her work. She infuses creativity and a strength-based approach with every student she serves. She sees her role as extending beyond her assigned schools as she is an eager participant in board-wide initiatives, such as the Anti-Black Racism & Black Excellence Committee and the Black Heritage and Excellence Celebration Committee. Lara is a professional with exceptional skill and a positive and warm presence, which makes her a true gift and blessing to DCDSB."

A Caring Family Member is an individual who attends to family, school, parish and the wider community.

• Lilly H. - Grade 4: Lilly was nominated by an educator at her school, Ms. Mendes, who said: “Lilly embodies the characteristics of a Caring Family Member in her actions and in her words. This is most apparent in her welcoming and inclusive actions with a new student to our school and in our classroom this year. She went out of her way to ensure that our new friend would be included in recess and group activities. She checks in with this student daily to see how they are doing and often will draw pictures to brighten their day. Lilly's patience and care is lovely to behold and serves as a model for her peers.”  
• Quinnton O. - Grade 5: Quinnton was nominated by his Principal, Ms. McCrory, who said: "Quinnton always makes an effort to honour his classmates and educators. Quinnton has regularly partnered with students in his classroom to demonstrate his respect and compassion for inclusivity and will often go out of his way to support students during their movement breaks. Quinnton's daily actions of walking along with his peers, are reflective of Jesus' walk to Emmaus, as a Pilgrim of Hope for all students to be a model of Christ."
• Ayeesha Y. - Grade 12: Ayeesha was nominated by a fellow peer. They said: "Ayeesha is a shining example of leadership, inclusivity, and dedication. Through her enthusiastic and compassionate approach, Ayeesha has transformed the Student Council into a space where every member feels valued, heard, and inspired. Her natural ability to encourage and uplift others has fostered a safe, welcoming environment, empowering her peers to contribute their ideas and grow as individuals.”
•  Krystian M. - Grade 12: Krystian was nominated by his school chaplain, Mr. LeeLoy, who said: “Since Grade 9, Krystian has been serving and engaging in the family-school-parish collaboration which is part of the vision of Catholic Education in celebrating our faith in partnership with parishes and families. At school, Krystian offers his talents through peer tutoring. On a wider scale, Krystian focuses on ways to engage with the local community as a soccer match official for local soccer clubs and as a recreational camp counsellor. He is a beacon of hope as his faith carries him to serve his family, his parish, and his school."
• Mike Petryshyn - Math Teacher: Mike was nominated by a student, who said: "Mr. Petryshyn is a passionate and dedicated math teacher and truly exemplifies what it means to be a "Caring Family Member." Mike is more than just a teacher—he's a mentor, a guide, and a source of unwavering support for his students. The energy in Mike’s classroom is palpable. Laughter, collaboration, and discussions fill the space as students work together. What makes Mike stand out is his extraordinary willingness to help any student, even if they’re not in his class. Whether it’s staying late to explain a difficult concept, helping a student prepare for an important test, or offering words of encouragement during stressful times. His door is literally and figuratively open, symbolizing his commitment to being there for everyone in the school community.” 
• Coline Shennan - Program Support Teacher: Coline was nominated by her school Principal, Ms. Assenza, who said: “Coline is a dedicated mother, daughter, aunt, wife and Bosco family member. Coline shows a deep respect for the thoughts and feelings of family and community members by truly listening to them. Coline demonstrates compassion through small and large gestures. Whether comforting a family or community member in distress or offering support in times of difficulty, she consistently shows care and concern. Coline cultivates an atmosphere where each community member feels valued, loved, and respected. By modeling these behaviors, she ensures that her classroom is a safe space for emotional expression and personal growth, where everyone can be themselves without fear of judgment.” 

A Collaborative Contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good.

• Fabian D. - Grade 7: Fabian was nominated by his school Principal, Mr. Linhares, who said: “Fabian walks around our school with a smile and a purpose, always looking to help someone—whether it's a student or a staff member. He is happy to give his time and talents to assist others. As an altar server, he also serves at our monthly school masses. Fabian embodies the Christian values we aim to instill in our students, giving us hope for a wonderful future because he will be part of it. We are blessed to have him in our school.” 
• Bella M. - Grade 7: Bella was nominated by her Principal, Ms. Babb, who said: "Bella is known for her warm and friendly personality, always making those around her feel welcomed and valued. She consistently volunteers her time to help others, whether it's assisting classmates or supporting school events. Bella’s caring nature shines through in her thoughtful gestures, always ensuring that everyone feels included and appreciated. Bella truly embodies the spirit of generosity and compassion in everything she does.”
• Makayla D. - Grade 12: Makayla was nominated by Student Trustee Walsh, who said: "Makayla effectively contributes to DOC's school community. Makayla started up an English tutoring group for students who needed extra help writing essays or needed a second opinion on their work. Additionally, Makayla always contributes to any event that Student Council, or the Prom Committee sets up; she often volunteers her services for their fundraising. Without Makayla, our school community would not have half the support it does when it comes to school clubs and fundraisers.” 
• Nathyn T. - Grade 12: Nathyn was nominated by a community member, who said: “Nathyn is a dedicated and compassionate individual who has shown exceptional leadership and commitment to his community. Nathyn is a natural-born collaborator who uses kindness, empathy and generosity to bring people together, especially in recent events where he was instrumental in driving the success of our Annual Christmas Drive. Nathyn is deeply committed to improving the lives of those around him and works to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.” 
• Rob Daminato - Educator: Mr. Daminato was nominated by Superintendent Sorhaitz, who said: "Mr. Daminato is truly a collaborative contributor. Throughout his career, Rob has exemplified faith in action, modelling his faith to students by involving them in faith-centered charitable works to benefit Settlement House and Habitat for Humanity. Rob approaches his many projects with a joyful and humble heart. He never seeks recognition for his efforts; rather he leads with openness and compassion that are truly Christ-like. Rob inspires all around him to be collaborative contributors.” 
• Barbara McLaughlin - Educational Assistant: Barbara was nominated by one of her peers, who said: “As an EA/Skills Trainer for the Project SEARCH program, Barbara supports adult-students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities prepare for the world of work, and she encourages them to identify and enhance their God-given strengths and talents to support their growth and future independence. She participates actively and contributes significantly to conversations about how to support students. Barb models for others the importance of being vulnerable and brave. Every place Barb goes is better because her presence is there.” 

Lent is a time to reflect upon our relationship with God as we journey towards Easter. This month's Beacon of Hope nominee shares the Love of God with others by selflessly caring for their needs, especially with those in the school or community who may feel left out or in need of hope. 

• Benjamin C. - Senior Kindergarten: Benjamin was nominated by a community member who said: “Benjamin showcases love through the teachings of Jesus Christ. Without any guidance, Benjamin prays daily in which he thanks our Lord for all the amazing people and things in his life. Benjamin ensures he tells everyone in his life how much he loves them.”
• Christabel U. - Grade 7: Christabel was nominated by her Principal, Ms. Assenza, who said: "Christabel is the second eldest in a family with 4 children. She shows deep love for her family. Christabel takes care of her younger siblings, and she helps out around her home. She is a caring person who supports her friends at school and is always willing to help younger students. Christabel appreciates the smallest things others do for her and always lets them know by expressing her thanks. She is a caring, compassionate young lady.” 
• Jaycee H.- Grade 10: Jaycee was nominated by her teacher, who said: "Jaycee is a kind, caring, and loving individual who consistently stands up for others and ensures no one is left out. She goes above and beyond to include everyone, showing deep compassion and empathy. For Women's History Month, Jaycee took the lead in organizing a meaningful initiative where every identifying female in the school received a rose, a quote, and a friendship bracelet as a symbol of recognition and support. She demonstrates a strong commitment to social justice and is already planning ways to honour and support the cause of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women on May 5th. Through her actions, Jaycee truly exemplifies the love and hope we are called to share.” 
• Avanish A. - Grade 12: Avanish was nominated by a classmate, who said: “Avanish consistently exemplifies the theme of Love in all aspects of his life. His deep relationship with God and his unwavering care for others are the cornerstones of his character. Avanish approaches every task with a heart full of dedication and a mind focused on doing his best, always considering how his actions can reflect his faith and his love for those around him. He is not only a role model academically, but also a compassionate leader in our school community, consistently encouraging his peers to support one another in a spirit of unity and kindness.”
• Jessica Tone - Educator: Ms. Tone was nominated by multiple students and staff members. They said: "Ms. Tone has shown an exceeding amount of love to the students and other individuals at Monsignor John Pereyma. Every single day at lunchtime, Ms. Tone opens her doors to students who would like to come in and eat their lunch in her room. Ms. Tone has shown love to the students at Monsignor John Pereyma by being a teacher advocate for them. She has supported many clubs such as the BSA, the robotics club, the hair and aesthetics club, the arts club and much more. Ms. Tone is a beaming light to the Pereyma community and has put in a lot of effort in helping students.”
• Kathleen Frederick - Principal: Kathleen was nominated a parent at her school, who said: “Ms. Frederick is a true embodiment of love, compassion and dedication. As a parent to two neurodivergent children, I have witnessed firsthand how much she cares for all the students in her care but also those who are especially in need of an advocate and a safe place to land. While Ms. Frederick follows the words of Jesus “love one another as I have loved you” with every student, she also extends this to the relationships she builds with parents. She has given me hope during some hard times. We are blessed to have such a wonderful principal who truly embodies Catholic values and lives a life guided by love and in service to others.”

This month’s theme combines the OCSGE of being a Responsible Citizen and this year’s Catholic Education Week theme, Pilgrims of Hope. To be a "Pilgrim of Hope" is to be a Responsible Citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice, and the sacredness of human life.

• Pierce C. - Grade 6: Pierce was nominated by his school Principal, who said: "Pierce is a quiet leader who is always happy to help out others within the school community. He volunteers to serve at school liturgies as a reader, played a role in our Marian celebration drama reenactment, always helps peers in his own class and selflessly helps a Grade 1 student transition back inside successfully after recess each day. Pierce doesn’t boast about the service he provides but he is always a student you can count on. He is extremely patient with others who have needs and works hard to help others find success. He is an excellent embodiment as a Responsible Citizen and Pilgrim of Hope."
• Elana G. - Grade 8: Elena was nominated by her school Principal. They said: "Elana exemplifies the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectation of being a responsible citizen. Through consistent acts of kindness, leadership in service projects, and a deep commitment to social justice, she inspires others to live out Gospel values in everyday life. Elana consistently demonstrates integrity, respect, and a strong moral compass, making choices that reflect both faith and responsibility. Her willingness to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult, encourages others to act with courage and compassion. As a responsible citizen rooted in Catholic values, Elana not only serves but also inspires, reminding us all of the power of hope in action. In her daily interactions, Elana demonstrates a profound sense of responsibility and compassion. Her actions not only uplift those around her but also reflect the light of Christ, making her a true role model and a source of hope for a better, more caring world."
• Jarrell D. - Grade 12: Jarrell was nominated by a peer at his school. They said: "Jarrell is a model example of what it means to be both a Responsible Citizen and a Pilgrim of Hope. His actions consistently reflect the values of peace, justice, and respect for the sanctity of human life, core principles of Catholic social teaching. Jarrell approaches every opportunity with a deep sense of responsibility, both to his peers and to his community, demonstrating his commitment to living out his faith in a way that promotes positive change. As a leader, Jarrell actively engages in initiatives that foster inclusivity and respect within our school and beyond. Jarrell’s dedication to serving others is evident in his daily life, where he strives to make a tangible difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Jarrell consistently shows that being a responsible citizen is about making the world a better place for everyone."
• Nicole F. - Grade 12: Nicole was nominated by her school Chaplain, who said: "I nominate Nicole as she wholeheartedly reminds me of St. Mother Teresa's words: 'The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace.'
  As the Chaplaincy Leader at her school, I reached out to Nicole via Edsby, inviting her to be part of the DCDSB Easter video. Without much notice, her response was, 'That sounds like a lot of fun! I’d love to be a part of the video.' Nicole, touched by the great silence of Holy Saturday Vigil, explained that the Easter vigil mass is 'an amazing mass. It starts off completely dark. There's one candle. one light, which is Jesus,' and that 'slowly lighting the candles is like bringing light into the world.' Nicole has taken the ritual of the Easter vigil and has applied it in her school and parish community, sharing her faith with love and joy. She is also one of our Chaplaincy students who lead a prayerful reflection on the Stations of the Cross at our school Holy Week assembly. Nicole was a driving force behind the school's Multicultural night. She recruited me to lead a pavilion; she was a top contributor in two pavilions and recruited her mother to help out at the event. Nicole is an active Chaplaincy member and Life Teen core member at Holy Family Parish. Moved by Christ's love for all humanity, Nicole shares her love for Christ. Nicole is a responsible citizen, who is formed in Catholic tradition, appreciates the value of contributions toward the common good, and understands that each person has a gift to share."
• Tamika Bunting - Vice-Principal: Tamika was nominated by school staff. They said: "Ms. Bunting is a shining example of a Responsible Citizen of DCDSB. Her dedication and compassion make her an exceptional nominee for the Beacon of Hope award. Her tireless support for the board's equity initiatives is evident in her willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. As a leader, Tamika implements a culturally responsive approach to student achievements and discipline, centering and valuing their lived experiences. This approach had a profound impact on student conduct and engagement within her previous school communities, as noted by teachers. Tamika exemplifies strong leadership by mentoring and uplifting her colleagues with love, compassion, and a vibrant sense of humour. She is deeply committed to listening with empathy and offering guidance that inspires others to grow. Through her words and actions, she empowers educators to recognize and reach their full potential, often encouraging them to pursue leadership opportunities within the board. Tamika's strength and resilience in the face of adversity have inspired people around her, as she supports others based on her experiences. Her love, care, and commitment to creating a more inclusive environment make her a true beacon of hope." 
• Joseph Lynch - Educator: Joseph Lynch was nominated by a parent at his school, who said: "My wife and I just wanted to take a moment to personally recognize an absolutely incredible teacher at St. Josephs in Uxbridge. Of course, we are referring to Mr. Lynch. Our daughters have consistently expressed to us that Mr. Lynch is by far the best teacher they've ever had, and it definitely shows through their academic progress, growth in their faith and overall positive outlook on school life. That said, we felt compelled to convey our experience and recognize a standout teacher that we feel is a tremendous asset to St. Joseph’s and the DCDSB as a whole. As parents, we consider ourselves incredibly blessed to have had such a positive role model, teacher and mentor in their lives, and only wish he was teaching them again in Grade 8! Mr. Joseph Lynch is a teacher that embodies the spirit of our school, the broader Durham Catholic community, and truly a responsible citizen as a Pilgrim of Hope in every sense."

• Zachary M. - Grade 7: Zachary was nominated by numerous teachers at his school, who said: "Zachary has spent the year learning about and participating in various leadership roles in the school community. Zachary is a peer mentor; he has learned different ways to connect with younger students and is always the first person to volunteer when someone needs help. Zach has also been an integral part of our food initiative; he asked to help and is now an expert at cooking and helping to run the snack program. Zach has helped to train other students in the servery and is always available and willing to answer questions and offer additional training. Zachary often gives up his lunch hour to spend time participating in various activities with our Lunch Bunch group for students who need a little extra support. Zach has truly blossomed this year. He is always willing to learn something new that will benefit the greater school community. He is kind, empathetic, always up for a challenge and never shies away from an opportunity to help anyone in the building. We are lucky to have this remarkable young man as a member of our school community and look forward to seeing him continue to flourish in Grade 8."
• Gianna R. - Grade 7: Gianna was nominated by Trustee Hall, who said: "It is my pleasure to nominate two students as our June Beacons of Hope. Amelia R. and Gianna R. exemplify what it means to a self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates their God-given potential. In thinking about this Catholic Graduate Expectation, there are many ways Amelia and Gianna fulfil this expectation through skill, knowledge and value but most importantly, they fulfil this expectation through action and sharing their God given gifts with their community. Both Amelia and Gianna have been blessed with the gift of music and along with their siblings formed a band 'Celestial Quartet'. Celestial Quartet is a Christian band dedicated to spreading the love of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth through the gift of music and leading the people into a more profound experience of the worship given to God alone. Celestial Quartet is comprised of Amelia and Gianna, as well as their brothers Jeremy and Adrian who are All Saints and Notre Dame alumni. A self-directed, responsible, life long learner must listen with faith and humility and ask the question, how is the Spirit calling me to respond to our present context. In a world where musical influences for our young people include themes and language that do not reflect our Christian values, Celestial Quartet offers an alternative to mainstream music with their own originally composed faith-based songs consisting of all original music and lyrics. Celestial Quartet shares their gifts with our community every Sunday as the main choir for St. Bernadette's 7pm youth mass. Their beautiful arrangement of music provides an opportunity for deeper prayer and worship through song confirming the words of St. Augustine: "He who sings, prays twice'. In addition to singing at the 7pm mass, Celestial Quartet often sings at special masses such as the Easter Vigil and at weddings. At school Amelia and Gianna share their talents with their school communities, participating in school choirs and performances. Gianna is also an alter server at St. Bernadette who has been serving for many years and inspiring other young females in her footsteps! Amelia, Gianna and Celestial Quartet is a beautiful example of DCDSB's home, school and parish relationship demonstrating how DCDSB students take leadership and demonstrate Christian leadership in their communities."

• Chrystopher M.K. - Grade 11: Chrystopher was nominated by his Vice-Principal, Mr. Travis. He said: “Chrystopher is someone who develops and demonstrates his God-given potential as revealed through his immense personal, social and academic growth this year. He has dedicated himself to his scholastic achievements as well as his social involvement at Monsignor Paul Dwyer. Chrystopher’s growth is also a testament to his ability to reflect and embrace the changes needed to shape his character and future. His dedication to self-improvement has also allowed him to remain grounded and focused. This recognition acknowledges and celebrates his continued growth into the exceptional young man he has become.”
• Calbert Hutchinson - Educator: 

  Mr. Hutchinson was nominated by parents at his school, who said: “Mr. Hutchinson is an educator, leader, and role model who exemplifies lifelong learning and unwavering dedication to his students and community. His passion for education is evident in the way he fosters meaningful discussions, encouraging active participation, and mutual learning among his students. His belief that education is a shared journey—where both teacher and students grow together—demonstrates his commitment to fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment. As a former principal who chose to return to teaching, Mr. Hutchinson's dedication to understanding and improving the school system is commendable. His continuous pursuit of knowledge through professional development and collaboration with peers showcases his commitment to both personal and institutional growth. His impact extends beyond the classroom, as he shares his love for sports and an active lifestyle through his voluntary leadership roles. Serving as the President of the Jamaican Lacrosse Association and Vice President of the Pan-American Lacrosse Association, he has played a pivotal role in promoting sportsmanship, discipline, and community engagement. • Dean Adams - Occasional Teacher: Mr. Adams was nominated by his colleague, Ms. Parsons, who said: "If there’s anyone who truly lives out what it means to be a self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner, it’s Dean. After 14 years as a dedicated early childhood educator, he made the decision to go back to school and pursue his Bachelor of Education—not because he had to, but because he genuinely wants to grow and continue making a difference in students’ lives. That kind of drive doesn’t come from obligation—it comes from purpose. Even while navigating life as a full-time student, Dean continues to support schools as a supply teacher and hasn’t stepped back from being involved. In fact, while on leave from his permanent role, he’s taken on the massive responsibility of coordinating the board’s folk dance program—an enormous undertaking that brings joy to hundreds of students and staff across the region. He manages all of this with humility, heart, and an unwavering commitment to learning and leading. You can see his passion in everything he does. Dean doesn’t just talk about being a lifelong learner—he lives it. And in doing so, he inspires the rest of us to do the same."
