Anti-Black Racism and Black Excellence Advisory Committee Nominations

Currently Seeking a Chair and Vice-Chair

The Anti-Black Racism and Black Excellence Advisory Committee is currently seeking to elect a new Chair and Vice-Chair, which will take place at the May 21, 2026, committee meeting.

The committee’s mandate provides a medium for effectively addressing and dismantling disadvantages and discrimination, historical or otherwise, experienced by Black students, staff and families in our Board.

To be eligible for nomination, candidates must:
  • Be a parent, guardian, or caregiver of a student currently enrolled in one of the Board’s schools for the period of the tenure for which they seek to be elected.
  • Demonstrate either expertise, lived experience, or a genuine commitment to learning about anti-Black racism, diversity, inclusion, and human rights - with the goal of dismantling anti-Black racism and promoting Black Excellence within our Board.

  • Nominations for Chair and Vice Chair opened on Monday, March 20, 2026, and close on Monday May 11, 2026
  • If you are nominating someone else, please ensure you have their consent and that they are willing to run for the position. All submitted nominations will be confirmed via email, which will also include details about the election process, date, and time. All submitted nominations will be confirmed via email.

  • The committee will meet at least six times in a school year (once in either September or October and at least once in November, January, February, April and May). The Executive may also call for a meeting of the committee outside of these specified meeting dates as may be necessary. Subcommittees or working groups will meet as may be required for the performance of their functions.
  • Meetings will be no more than one and a half hours (1.5 hrs) except in special circumstances where members agree to additional time.

  • Non-Board officers of the Committee will be eligible to serve two consecutive terms of two years.

  • The election will take place during the May 21, 2026, committee meeting.
  • All persons who seek to be elected as Chair will be allowed five (5) minutes each before the election commences to address the committee on their plans. Candidates seeking election as Vice‑Chair will be provided up to three (3) minutes each.
  • Immediately following the speech of candidates, all voting members will cast their vote for the candidate of their choice.
  • Voting will be by secret balloting. Votes cast will be counted by the HREA and Superintendent and the results will be announced immediately.
  • In the event of a tie, a second round of voting will be conducted as provided above. Where there is a further tie, the winner of the election shall be decided by a straw vote.
